The "Prodigy" Artist
The american child prodigy singer, composer, arranger, producer and many instrument player most successful in the eighties. The genius from Minneapolis, Prince Rogers Nelson was born in 1958 , and his first steps into the music go as far as his College days. Prince reigned as one of modern musics’ originals; beginning at the age of seven when he taught himself to play piano. He quickly moved on to guitar, drums ans, eventually, 23 other instruments. Prince’s father was a Minneapolis-area bandleader- His mother was the band’s vocalist. At age 12, Prince began composing and soon joined a group, Grand Central (later Champagne), which played and gained notoriety at Minneapolis parties and dances. In 1976, he left the band to pursue a solo career.
A demo tape of orginal material landed Prince a recording contract with Warner Bros, the only company that would allow him to produce his own album.
In late 1977, Warner’s released The Artist’s debut album For You. Prince composed and arranged its nine original songs, performing and producing the album. "Soft and Wet", the album’s hit single, was an early intoduction to The Artist’s sizzling, sexually explicit lyrics approach. The taut, keyboard-dominated sound of For You served notic of the whole new blend of rock, R&B and danc rhythms that was to make The Artist a major influency on the music of the 80s.
The controversial, polemical and fanciful Artist made the lists with I Wanna Be Your Lover, included in his album "Prince". During this period, he played with a band called The Time, made with players like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and with this band he made several LPs, like Dirty Mind (1981), Controversy (1982) or 1999 (1983), in which LP is included Little Red Corvette, his first hit in the U.K. In 1999 his distinctive style is evident, a combination of rock, funk and disc, named by some people Electrofunk. In 1984 comes forth Purple Rain, together with the movie, being number one in the US lists for more than twenty weeks, a record. The 1985 LP, Around The World In A Day, was a work in which the band that used to go with Prince went through a drastic change, named afterwards The Revolution, and came together with one of the best periods of his career. Parade (1986) and Sign ‘O’ The Times (1987) went up in the lists everywhere, turning both of then Platinum LPs. But his prolific activity begins to be excessive for the commercial objectives of his record company, so his following LP is a " pirate record" : Black Album did not came out of press with the Warner sign,as intended, and became one of the most searched and expensive bootlegs for a long time.
Prince’s following hit was Lovesexy (1988). Moreover, he already had by then his own record label, and during the 90s he kept on publishing as frequently as he could, even changing his name in 1994: now his name is "the Artist formerly known as Prince". He has remain firm in his contentious with the old record company, defending his right to publish freely his own projects, and for the moment without any relation with commercial interests. Prince has resorted to publishing his production under other names and denominations. Even his next to last job, a gathering of great hits, has been published as a double album, a peculiarity more of this imaginative and hyper-active artist; he even was one of the first artists to follow the trend of publishing interactive Cd-Roms, based on music, entering into the multimedia world.
Symbol was his last production under his old name of Prince, was published in 1992, and in 1995 the Gold Experience toghether with The New Power Generation. Nowadays he continues creating more and more music, his last title being New Power Soul , published by his own record company.
